For kids, an important part of growing up is learning to become more responsible for making choices about what to eat and do. As parents, we struggle to strike a balance between helping our kids make good choices and respecting their ability to make their own decisions. One of the best things we can do for our kids is be a good role model.
When it comes to eating and exercise, the phrase “actions speak louder than words” couldn’t be more true. Kids tend to pay more attention to what you do rather than what you say, so back up your words with positive actions. If you want your kids to eat smart, the most important thing you can do is eat
smart, too. This may mean drinking milk with your meals, eating fruit as a snack, and enjoying sensible portions.
The same goes for being physically active. If you model a lifestyle that includes regular exercise, your kids will likely do the same. Better yet, be active together. Riding bikes, in-line skating, taking family walks, playing catch or shooting hoops are just a few ways to enjoy being active as a family. Remember that kids also emulate your use of television, computers, and video games. So be sure to balance the time spent in these sedentary pastimes with being physically active.
